Trip to Alnwick Castle

This is Alnwick (pronounced Ann-ik) Castle, an estate that is still used as a private residence for the Percy family during the winter months. It is also known as the "Harry Potter" castle because the outside of the castle and some portions of the courtyards were used in the filming of the movie. FYI - some parts of the Durham Cathedral were used in Harry Potter as well!

We spent the whole day here where there are many little exhibits and different castle nooks to explore. People like to picnic here. Also, the estate has a famous garden area that is quite lush and an extravagent "tree house" restaurant. We did the castle part this trip. Next trip we will do the gardens. This is by far the coolest castle in the North East and also one of the most complete (and well preserved). There is also a fun area for kids to dress up in knight clothing or princess dresses and joust and do other caste-ly things. Not much for 11-month olds - sorry Simmy! Also, the cafe is really fun (called "the Sanctuary").
